Fertility – Male Factor

By Claire Boxer

Did you know that sperm rates have dramatically declined around the world in the last 20 years? From the year 2000 the rate of sperm decline has accelerated to over 2.6% per year.

Because testing reference ranges are based on what is ‘normal’ for the population as sperm rates decline the ranges of what is considered to be normal has declined too.

This means that before the year 2000 the range considered to be appropriate for morphology (that’s the shape and form of the sperm) was 30% and it is now 4%

And for motility (the direction the sperm swims in) pre 2000 the range was 75% and now its 40%

For men this means that if they told that they are within range now – 20 years ago they may have been a different story in fact they may have been told they were infertile.

So even if you have been told that you or your partner’s sperm is fine…it might be worth getting your test results checked by an alternative health practitioner who specialises in fertility…because if you/ they sit at the lower end of the range its worth being proactive and applying scientific based protocols and supplements to support sperm health.

Male infertility contributes to approximately half of all cases of infertility however it is much less discussed than female infertility.
